Opportunities |
Adult
literacy tutors
Literacy volunteers need tutors. Help
teach adults to learn to read or learn English in a
one-on-one setting. Volunteers are required to complete a
20-hour training. Tutors meet with students on average of
once a week. |
Child
Literacy
The Senior Buddy Readers in Meriden and
Generation Reads in New Britain need volunteers during the
school year to work one-on-one with children to help improve
their reading skills. Spending 1 hour a week with a child
and giving them extra attention makes a significant
difference in that student’s educational success and self-esteem. No previous experience is necessary. Volunteers
must commit to one hour a week between October and June.

Drivers
Volunteers are needed to drive elderly
residents in New Britain and Southington to doctor’s appointments. Volunteers are asked to
give their time two days a month and use their own car.
RSVP will provide mileage reimbursement. Help an elderly
neighbor get the medical attention they need to stay healthy
and safely in their own homes instead of a nursing home. |
Television production
Nutmeg TV is looking for
volunteers to help with camera work and show production.
Training is provided. This job is a great way to learn new
skills and make an impact through community television. |
Tax
assistance
Volunteers are needed to help complete
individual tax returns. Help is needed from January to
April. Completion of a 16-hour training by the IRS is
required and a commitment of 4 hours a week is asked. |
Consumer
Advocacy
The Attorney General’s office in Hartford
needs volunteers to assist them in helping Connecticut
residents. Volunteers work with local businesses, state
agencies and the Assistant Attorneys General to help victims
of fraud recover lost money or help resolve issues of
fraudulent goods and services. There is a flexible schedule
during normal business hours. Prior business experience is
helpful but not necessary. |
Golf
tournament
The spring and summer bring golf
tournaments to our communities. Help is always needed in
the running of hole in one tournaments and hole monitoring.
These one-day events are a terrific way to help a local
organization and spend a day in the sun having fun. |
General
office assistance
Many non-profit agencies in your
community are in need of office help. These jobs include
tasks such as data entry, telephone assistance and office
filing. Time schedules and skills needed vary by job. |
Friendly
visitors
Many elderly
residents live in isolation from friends and family, and are
in need of socialization. Volunteers are needed to help
provide companionship by visiting with people in their homes
once a week for about an hour. |
Phone
reassurance
Volunteers are needed to call homebound
elderly people on a weekly basis. Phone Friends talk about
anything from the weather and current events to history and
common interests. These efforts work to avoid isolation
among our elderly community. Scheduling is based on the
preferences of the volunteer and the person they are
calling. |
Board
members
Many non-profit agencies are looking for
volunteers to join their board of directors to assist in the
operations, oversight and strategic planning of the
organization. These jobs often require a monthly commitment
to attend meetings. |
Writer
RSVP needs a volunteer with experience in writing articles
and press releases for local newspapers, newsletters, etc.
This volunteer job can be done at the volunteer’s home on
his or her own schedule. |
Data
entry
The New Britain office of RSVP needs a volunteer
to help with data entry. Basic computer skills needed.
This job offers a flexible schedule during normal business
hours. |
